A soccer player has died after being hit by an object thrown from the crowd.

Albert Ebosse was declared dead after being taken to hospital in Tizi Ouzou, east of the Algerian capital, Algiers.

Reports suggest that fans were throwing rocks.

The striker played for JS Kabylie and had scored in a 2-1 home defeat by USM Alger on Saturday evening.

The 24-year-old Cameroonian was struck as he left the field at the end of the match.

Fans were apparently angry that their team had lost.

A statement from Ebosse’s club,
reports the BBC, said the player had “succumbed to a head injury.”

The club’s opponents described the death as a “bombshell” and “terrible.”

“African football cannot be the breeding ground for hooliganism whatsoever,” the president of the Confederation of African Football, Issa Hayatou, said. “We expect exemplary sanctions to be taken against this grave act of violence.”

Ebosse had played for JS Kabylie since July 2013.
