The U of L men’s soccer team is finding its new home much to its liking thus far.

In their third game at the brand-new Lynn Stadium, the Cards (2-1-1, 1-0 ACC) scored three first half goals en route to a dominant 5-0 win over Duke (2-2-1, 0-1) in Louisville’s ACC debut before 3,959 fans. Midfielder Ben Strong scored two goals — one in each half — to lead the Cards.

“Our goal was to come out in the first 10 minutes and get a quick goal,” Strong said. “We did a great job of that, of coming out hard. I was able to find some creases and my teammates found me.

The five goals were a welcome sight for Cards coach Ken Lolla. Louisville had totaled two goals in its first three games, a stretch that included a scoreless tie against Cornell on Sept. 5. It was the most goals Louisville had scored in a game since 2012.

“I was proud of the guys, proud of how we responded,” Lolla said. “This game was similar to the last two in that we moved the ball well, but the difference was in this game was our intent and our focus and finishing in the final third. I give the guys a lot of credit. I challenged them to be better and they were.”

The Cards made scoring look easy in the early going with two goals on its first two shots in the first 5:22. The first came at the 3:18 mark when midfielder Will Vitalis scored from immediately in front of the goal. Tim Kubel fed a perfect pass to Vitalis, a South Oldham High School alum, for the assist.

Just over two minutes later, Strong drove home a ball from about 10 feet in front of the goal.

Louisville nearly scored three more times over the next 18 minutes, the first coming when Strong’s header near the Duke goal hit the crossbar and high into the air where Duke goalkeeper Joe Ohaus leaped and snatched the ball.

At the 23:30 mark, Louisville took two strong shots from in front of the goal, but Duke goalkeeper Joe Ohaus stopped both, keeping the Louisville lead at 3-0.

Cards keeper Joachim Ball had three saves in the first half and four in the game.

Strong scored his second goal to make it 4-0 at the 54:09 mark. Ricardo Velazco passed to Strong from near midfield. Strong, one-on-one with the Duke keeper, centered a shot from the top of the circle.

Louisville finished the scoring at the 66:02 mark on a goal from the left side by Romilio Hernandez. Andrew Brody split two defenders with a pass from behind the goal to Hernandez.

The Cards largely controlled the tempo and kept the ball for much of the second half. The Blue Devils had only four shots on goal.
