STARKVILLE, Miss. — Mississippi State has hired LSU assistant Andy Cannizaro as its new baseball coach.

The 37-year-old Cannizaro replaces John Cohen, who was chosen as Mississippi State’s athletic director on Friday. Cannizaro has been the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator for LSU’s baseball program since 2014, where he helped develop players like infielder Alex Bregman, who now plays for the Houston Astros.

Cannizaro was an All-American in college at Tulane and briefly played in the big leagues with the New York Yankees in 2006 and Tampa Bay Rays in 2008. He was a scout for six years with the Yankees before going to LSU.

Cohen moved quickly to fill the school’s baseball job, announcing Cannizaro’s hire less than 24 hours after he was officially selected as athletic director.
