After more than a decade at the Albany Times Union, Sports Editor Pete Iorizzo is taking his game to the University at Albany, where he will be an assistant athletic director for media relations.
The 35-year-old, who has been with the newspaper since 2005, was named to the UAlbany post this week. Before serving as the the newspaper’s sports editor and columnist for the last five years, as a reporter Iorizzo covered UAlbany sports, the New York Giants training camp and the Giants’ Super Bowl victory in 2011.
“His extensive background as a sports writer, columnist and sports editor of the region’s leading newspaper will play an integral role, as we find new ways to tell the story of our amazing student-athletes,” said university Athletic Director Mark Benson.
Said Times Union Associate Editor Mike Spain, “The new position is a great opportunity and it lets Pete stay in our community that he and his family have come to love. The good news for us is we’ll continue to be working with him in his new role.”
As the sports editor, Iorizzo was honored by the Associated Press Sports Editors for his column writing in 2014, 2015 and 2016.
“I’m very excited to join a department with a winning tradition, exceptional student-athletes and an accomplished staff,” Iorizzo said. “After having covered many of the Great Danes’ successes as a journalist, I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue telling the UAlbany story, now as part of the team. I can’t wait to get to work.”
Before joining the Times Union, Iorizzo worked for the Idaho State Journal in Pocatello, Idaho, where he covered high school and college sports. He graduated from Syracuse University in 2004.
He and his wife, Mary Jane, reside in Clifton Park with their son.
