Sports anchor Dan Patrick delves into new media – USA TODAY
SAN FRANCISCO — NBC Sports anchor Dan Patrick has built a Hall of Fame-caliber career at the peacock network and, before that, then-upstarts CNN and ESPN.
So, why not host a new show, Sports Jeopardy, on Crackle, Sony Pictures Television’s digital network of free movie and TV content that includes Seinfeld episodes and original programming from the likes of Jerry Seinfeld (Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee).
“It’s where we’re headed with Millennials” (and their content consumption), says Patrick, host of NBC’s Sunday Night Football. “To be part of this process is exciting. It’s cutting edge.”
A popular show, with a respected host, is the type of programming integral to Crackle, one of 20 video-distribution sites as well as cable outlets and movie studios. The network boasts 18 million monthly users, most of them in the 18-to-34 age demographic.
Patrick need look no further than his 22-year-old son, an Apple TV devotee who is familiar with Crackle and was psyched to hear his dad has a show on the site. An app for the show was released earlier this year.
Sports Jeopardy, which premieres Wednesday with two episodes, is a continuation of the venerable game show. It is filmed on the same Culver City, Calif., stage as Jeopardy, but set in a sports bar-like setting. That show’s host, Alex Trebek, has a cameo on the new edition.
“If you’re a sports fan, you’ll be challenged by the clues. Final Jeopardy is particularly tough,” Patrick says. “I pride myself on having good sports knowledge, and I know 75% to 80% of the answers.”
A crew of sports buffs came up with the answers for Sports Jeopardy, says Patrick, a fan of the game show who harbored hopes of hosting it.
“I’m taking a chance on these types of vehicles,” Patrick says. “But this is exciting stuff.”
