Joe Biden just endorsed Trump’s asylum rule at the Democratic debate – Washington Examiner
Former Vice President Joe Biden supports “flooding” the southwest border with U.S. authorities who can “quickly” decide the fate of hundreds of thousands of Central American migrants seeking asylum.
What do you know? That’s exactly what the current White House wants!
At the Democratic presidential primary debate on Wednesday, Biden seemed to oppose the obscene influx of migrants pushing their way into Texas, hitting American soil and securing legal protection to indefinitely stay here by claiming asylum.
The migrants were “entitled to asylum,” he said. “That is not crossing the border illegally. What we should do is flood the zone to make sure we have people to make those decisions quickly.”
He’s sort of right, sort of not, and perhaps deliberately obscuring the facts. Any foreigner can claim asylum on American soil once they reach it. The problem is, it’s supposed to otherwise be illegal to cross on to U.S. territory without first seeking permission. And therein lies the root of the current crisis at our border: ungodly numbers of migrants touching land in Texas outside of legal ports of entry (illegal), who then find a U.S. Border Patrol agent to claim asylum (legal).
But what Biden proposed is more important. He said that if elected president, his administration would “flood the zone” with officials who could “make those decisions” on asylum-seekers “quickly.”
That sounds strikingly familiar. Here’s from an NBC report just this week:
In the email, a National Security Council official tells Customs and Border Protection officials to come prepared to a meeting scheduled for Friday, July 26, because Miller is interested in the rate of approval for initial screenings for migrants interviewed by Border Patrol agents versus asylum officers.
That sounds a lot like an attempt to “flood the zone” and make asylum decisions “quickly.”
Biden and Miller are both right. Immigration courts are currently backlogged by nearly 1 million cases, largely because of the unmanageable numbers of migrants claiming asylum. The courts are so overwhelmed that the expected date for an immigration case hearing can stretch to five years. That’s five years that an illegal immigrant is kept in the country, especially if he or she comes with a child (a little trick that all the human traffickers know about).
Biden doesn’t know it, but he just offered a glowing endorsement of the Trump administration’s new rule on asylum-seekers.
