WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. — Jill Biden ribbed President Trump for his interest in Greenland during a speech at a Democratic fundraiser.

The former second lady, on a two-day swing of the Carolinas, urged South Carolina Democrats in West Columbia on Saturday to recall what politics was like pre-Trump, a time when the commander in chief didn’t issue surprise pronouncements on social media.

“Just for a moment I want you to imagine that it’s the summer of 2021,” Biden, 68, told a crowd of about 50 gathered for a barbecue fundraiser by the Lexington County Democratic Party. “You wake up in the morning, you pour yourself your cup of coffee, you pick up the morning paper, and the headline isn’t about some late-night tweet or buying another country.”

The 68-year-old community college professor’s remarks came after former Vice President Joe Biden’s campaign ripped Trump for calling off a meeting with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen ahead of the G-7 Summit over his desire to acquire the resource-rich autonomous Danish territory.

It also follows the longtime senator for Delaware receiving flak for imploring New Hampshire voters this weekend to “imagine what would have happened if, God forbid, Barack Obama had been assassinated after becoming the de facto nominee.”

Saturday’s fundraiser for the Lexington County Democratic Party — which, despite a high liberal turnout, still operates in a Republican stronghold — doubled as a presidential forum where representatives from other campaigns contesting the right to challenge Trump next year addressed the audience. Jill Biden used her 10-minute spot to remind those in attendance of the importance of party unity.

“I think of all the candidates running for president, all of the ones against this wall and that wall. I know how lucky we are to have such a dynamic and talented group,” she said. “I’m inspired by all of the people, all of the people here and the people I meet across this country who are showing up for their candidates, no matter who they support, because we’re Democrats. And we know that the most important thing is to come together to win in November.”

Biden caused her own flap in New Hampshire this week when she encouraged Democrats to consider electability and her husband’s chances against Trump given his front-runner status and strong performance in the polls.

“Your candidate might be better on, I don’t know, healthcare than Joe is, but you’ve got to look at who’s going to win this election, and maybe you have to swallow a little bit and say, ‘OK, I personally like so and so better, but your bottom line has to be that we have to beat Trump,'” she said on Monday.

Biden spent Saturday in the Palmetto State, hosting a second event in Great Falls, another GOP-dominated area. Her itinerary also included a fundraiser in Asheville, North Carolina, on Friday night.
