Red Berenson’s retirement on Monday creates an opening behind Michigan’s bench for the first time in 33 years. The Wolverines were a college hockey powerhouse during Berenson’s tenure, reaching the NCAA tournament 23 times, including a 22-year streak from 1990-2012, which still is a record.
The 77-year-old guided Michigan to 11 NCAA Frozen Four appearances and two national championships. He is one of four college coaches with 800 wins.
Berenson’s successor will have large shoes to fill. The new coach also will be the first major hire for Michigan Athletic Director Warde Manuel since taking over in January 2016.
The search is expected to begin immediately, with Berenson staying on as a special advisor at Michigan. MLive has laid out a list of potential candidates for the position.
