BERKELEY – It is a Shore Conference Tournament Final sequel that has all the parts to make it better than last year’s debut.
The showtime is 5 p.m. Saturday at Central Regional High School as the No. 6 seed Colts Neck girls soccer team (12-2-1), the defending SCT champion, faces No. 2 seed Freehold Township (16-1-3), last year’s SCT runner up.
“Losing all those seniors that we had last year was certainly tough. And the leadership and everything they brought to the game was incredible, but we knew what we had coming back in a lot of (this year’s) players,” Freehold Township coach Dave Patterson said. “Some people knew some of the names, but we knew what we had coming up as we have excellent sub-varsity players and excellent coaches at those levels as well. We are a deep team, and there are girls that still haven’t got on the field this year, but I know if they had opportunities, they could contribute in big spots.”
Girls Soccer: Freehold Township’s Colbert delivers shining moment in SCT semis
And those opportunities might come on Saturday against a team the Patriots have played twice already thanks to the realignment of divisions by the Shore Conference.
In game one on Sept. 13 at Freehold Township, the Patriots’ Nicole Sasso and Jada Colbert each had one goal while Angela DeCicco made five saves. Meanwhile, Colts Neck’s Isabella Fitzhenry had two goals and Victoria Spieler had eight saves as the Patriots and the Cougars tied 2-2 in two overtimes.
The rematch was on Sept. 30 at Colts Neck, and Freehold Township won 3-1 as Jada Colbert, Sasso and Jasmine Colbert each scored a goal while Angela DeCicco made 10 saves. Conversely, Colts Neck’s Kayla Lee had one goal and Spieler had eight saves.
Girls Soccer: Colts Neck’s Tagliaferri scores twice in SCT semis
“We just have to relax. We know we can play, and we know the opportunities are going to come,” Colts Neck coach Dough Phillips said. “If we just defend and relax and keep the ball on the deck, play simple soccer, we can get it done.”
Since losing back to back games this season to Freehold Township on Sept. 30 and to Manalapan on Oct. 7, the Cougars have won seven in a row. Senior Frankie Tagliaferri made her season debut on Oct. 13 and now has a team-leading 16 goals in just six games. It is hard to ignore the “Frankie Factor” as Tagliaferri, a member of the U.S. Women’s Soccer U-17 team, is probably the fastest player in the state.
“A lot of players love scoring, and obviously I love scoring, too, but passing is something I take a lot of pride in, and I love setting my teammates up, and I love seeing them score and getting the glory and being happy,” said Tagliaferri, who also has four assists this season. “I don’t like being a selfish player, and if I see that another player has a better angle, I’m going to give them the ball.”
Tagliaferri, Lee (12 goals, 11 assists), Fitzhenry (seven goals, five assists) and Tara Walenczyk (six goals, seven assists) are the Cougars leading scorers this season while Spieler had made 56 saves.
As for Freehold Township, Jasmine Colbert (12 goals, seven assists), Nicole Sasso (12 goals, seven assists), Laura Noseworthy (nine goals, three assists) and Jada Colbert (seven goals, six assists) are the Patriots leading scorers this season while Angela DeCicco had made 79 saves.

For the first time since 2009, two division rivals will meet in the boys soccer Shore Conference Tournament final.
And coincidentally, the teams meeting in this year’s SCT Final, No. 1 seed CBA (19-1) and No. 2 seed Marlboro (17-1-1), were the same teams that met in the 2009 final, which Marlboro won 2-1.
