At least 222 people have died and hundreds more are injured after a tsunami struck the west coast of Indonesia following a volcanic eruption.
The tsunami slammed into beach resorts around Indonesia’s Sunda Strait, off the islands of Java and Sumatra, destroying buildings in its path.
The eruption of a volcano known as the “child” of the legendary Krakatoa led to the tsunami at 9.30pm local time last night.

Rescue workers were searching through rubble for survivors, with 222 people confirmed dead, 843 injured and 28 reported missing across three regions. Authorities expect the death toll to rise.
The tsunami came without warning, despite the precautions taken since the Boxing Day disaster of 2004, which killed more than 225,000 people, most of them Indonesians.
