Barnard, though, insisted Varnish was still not in possession of any data which would support that conclusion. “They’ve given us something like 40 million data points but it is unintelligible,” he said. “It should be demonstrable, surely? The obvious inference is they don’t have any data to support their decision.

British Cycling insisted it had provided the necessary data and had offered to meet with Varnish’s camp again for further discussions but they had so far declined.

Barnard added: “Jess is still considering the report, considering her options. But this isn’t the end of it. Jess has suffered financial harm. Apart from anything else, she has lost funding – unfairly. She has lost the opportunity to win medals, to claim sponsorship. It would appear from the report that she has been discriminated against. And the process by which she was removed was patently wrong.
