On the shelf:

Garrett Richards, SP, Los Angeles Angels: He landed on the 60-day DL Thursday after suffering a torn patellar tendon on his left knee while running to cover first base on Wednesday. Richards will miss the next six to nine months.

Starlin Castro, SS, Chicago Cubs: He was placed on the bereavement list and will likely miss the next week of action following a tragic car crash in his native Dominican Republic that claimed the lives of his cousin and three of Castro’s friends. Javier Baez will play shortstop for the Cubs until Castro returns.

Joaquin Benoit, RP, San Diego Padres: He hasn’t pitched since Aug. 13 because of a shoulder injury and there’s no timetable for Benoit’s return. Kevin Quackenbush picked up the save on Wednesday and should be owned by all fantasy players looking for saves.

David Ortiz, DH, Boston Red Sox: He was pinch hit for on Wednesday due to general soreness, and Ortiz did not start on Thursday.

Michael Cuddyer, OF, Colorado Rockies: He hasn’t played since Sunday because of a sore hamstring, and Cuddyer will be out until at least Friday.

Zack Greinke, SP, Los Angeles Dodgers: He was scratched from Thursday’s start due to a tender elbow, but Greinke is scheduled to start on Saturday. Clayton Kershaw was Greinke’s Thursday replacement.

Jenrry Mejia, RP, New York Mets: He is dealing with a sore back and hasn’t pitched since Monday. Jeurys Familia picked up the save on Wednesday in Mejia’s absence.

Chad Qualls, RP, Houston Astros: He was unable to pitch on Wednesday due to back pain, but the injury doesn’t appear to be severe. Consider Qualls day-to-day.

Carlos Beltran, OF, New York Yankees: He hurt his right elbow during Tuesday’s game and has not played since. Consider Beltran day-to-day for now.

Mike Napoli, 1B, Red Sox: He did not play on Wednesday due to back spasms, and was not in Thursday’s lineup. Consider Napoli day-to-day for now.

Will Middlebrooks, 3B, Red Sox: He hasn’t played since leaving Tuesday’s contest with tightness in his right hamstring, and Middlebrooks will likely be out for a couple more games.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis, OF, Mets: He has not played since Monday due to a stiff neck. Consider Nieuwenhuis day-to-day for now.

Edwin Jackson, SP, Cubs: He landed on the 15-day DL Thursday due to a strained right lat. It has not been determined who will take Jackson’s place in the rotation.

Mark Ellis, 2B, St. Louis Cardinals: He landed on the 15-day DL on Tuesday with a strained left oblique. Greg Garcia was recalled from Triple-A to take Ellis’ spot on the active roster, and Kolten Wong will be the regular second baseman moving forward.

Aroldis Chapman, RP, Cincinnati Reds: He was not available to pitch on Monday because of pain in his throwing shoulder, but this doesn’t appear to be a major injury, and Chapman should be on the mound during the team’s next save situation.

On the mend:

Buster Posey, C, San Francisco Giants: He missed Wednesday’s game with a hip injury, but returned to action on Thursday.

Allen Craig, OF, Red Sox: He was activated from the 15-day DL on Thursday, and Craig will be the team’s designated hitter.

Andrew Cashner, SP, Padres: He will be activated from the 15-day DL in time for Saturday’s start.

Dustin Ackley, OF, Seattle Mariners: He did not start on Wednesday because of a sore back, but Ackley was able to pinch hit in the eighth inning and should be in Friday’s lineup.

Justin Verlander, SP, Detroit Tigers: Despite dealing with a shoulder injury, Verlander had a successful bullpen session on Thursday and is expected to make his next start (Saturday).

Masahiro Tanaka, SP, Yankees: He will face live hitters on Saturday for the first time since suffering a partially torn UCL in his right elbow. Tanaka is still targeting a return to the Yankees next month.

Other notes:

Alex Meyer, SP, Minnesota Twins: The team will reportedly call up the star prospect in September to use in the rotation. Meyer is 6-6 with 3.37 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 10.6 K/9 in 24 Triple-A starts this season.
