Matt Mika remains in critical condition after being shot multiple times at a congressional baseball practice Wednesday morning, his family said in a statement.

Mika is a Tyson Foods lobbyist and former staffer for two Michigan congressmen. He was among the four people shot by James Hodgkinson at Simpson Park in Alexandria, Va., during a practice for Thursday’s congressional baseball game.

His family says he remains in critical condition, and requires assistance to breathe. He remains conscious and has been communicating through notes, the family says.

Mika will need additional surgeries.

“We truly appreciate the outpouring of support, love and prayers,” the Mika family said in a statement. “Our family continues to be in shock and we ask for privacy while we focus on Matt and his care. Because of his condition, Matt cannot receive visitors or accept gifts at the ICU” at George Washington University Hospital.

Mika, a member of the Republican congressional baseball team, was shot multiple times in his chest and arm, and “suffered massive trauma,” his family said.

“We are grateful for the care he has received, from the first responders in the field to the world-class care here at the hospital,” the Mika family said. “We understand he is lucky to be alive and we owe it to these amazing individuals and Matt’s fighting spirit and grit. Additionally, we want to thank the Capitol Police for their heroic actions to stop the shooter before he could hurt even more people.”

The family will provide further updates on Mika’s condition as his status changes.
