NEW YORK – Retiring Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter has let it known that his post-playing aspirations include pulling a George Steinbrenner and buying a Major League club.
Yankees great Mariano Rivera thinks it’ll happen for his long-time teammate.
“He says he wants to own a team,” baseball’s all-time saves leader said Sunday on Derek Jeter Day at Yankee Stadium. “I trust him and I believe that. He will. One day he will own a baseball team.”
Jeter’s focus for the time being is on trying to get the Yankees hot enough in September to make a run at a wild card playoff spot, which has become a long shot.
Rivera retired after the 2013 season with the Yankees missing the playoffs.
If the same happens for Jeter, Rivera thinks the Yankees’ final series in Boston will be very difficult.
“He still has more games to go,” Rivera said. “The last day will be the toughest. He’s going to find out. At the same time, I can tell him that retiring is awesome.”
