On this date in 1985, Pete Rose became baseball’s all-time hit king with a first-inning line-drive single to left field off Padres righty Eric Show. It was his 4,192nd career hit, breaking Ty Cobb’s long-standing record.
Here is the historic hit:
Rose, who was 44 at the time, was serving as player-manager for the Reds. He retired following the 1986 season with 4,256 career hits, a record that will not be broken anytime soon.
Four years after becoming the all-time hit king, Rose was banned from baseball for life after it was discovered he had bet on baseball games earlier in the decade. He remains banned and is ineligible for the Hall of Fame despite having more hits than any player ever.
