On the shelf:

Pedro Alvarez, 3B, Pittsburgh Pirates: Alvarez was not in the starting lineup Wednesday because of a sprained left foot, an injury he suffered on Tuesday. It’s unclear how long he’ll be out.

Jorge De La Rosa, SP, Colorado Rockies: De La Rosa exited his start on Tuesday due to a left thumb contusion.

Anthony Rizzo, 1B, Chicago Cubs: Rizzo left Tuesday’s game due to tightness in his lower back. The move was described as precautionary, so the slugger isn’t expected to miss much (if any) time.

Yordano Ventura, SP, Kansas City Royals: Ventura was scratched from this Wednesday start due to a stiff back. At this point, it’s unlikely the right-hander misses more than one start. Liam Hendricks will start in Ventura’s place.

David Wright, 3B, New York Mets: He left Sunday’s game with neck spasms and was not in Tuesday’s lineup. Consider Wright day-to-day for now.

Daniel Murphy, 2B, Mets: Murphy left Sunday’s game with soreness in his right calf and was not in Tuesday’s lineup. He is day-to-day.

David Ortiz, DH, Boston Red Sox: After fouling a ball off his right foot on Sunday, Ortiz did not play on Monday or Tuesday. Consider him day-to-day.

Justin Ruggiano, OF, Chicago Cubs: He hasn’t played since Friday because of a sore left ankle and remains day-to-day.

Wilin Rosario, C, Colorado Rockies: Rosario has not played since Friday due to a sore left wrist, but he should be back on the field shortly.

On the mend:

Hyun-Jin Ryu, SP, Los Angeles Dodgers: Ryu, on the DL with a glute injury, could rejoin the Dodgers’ starting rotation this weekend. He threw a simulated game on Wednesday.

Xander Bogaerts, SS, Boston Red Sox: Bogaerts landed on the concussion DL on Sunday, but he’s now symptom-free. Expect him to return to action this weekend.

George Springer, OF, Houston Astros: Springer has been out since July 19 because of a strained left quad. He is expected to return to the Astros on Sept. 2.

Yadier Molina, C, Cardinals: He is expected to begin a rehab assignment this week and could return to the Cardinals as soon as this weekend. Molina hasn’t played since July 9, when he tore a ligament in his right thumb.

Brett Gardner, OF, New York Yankees: Gardner hasn’t played since Saturday because of an injured ankle, but was scheduled to return to action Wednesday.
